Bacteria phages: why aren't they living?
Before I get started, let me just say that I know that they aren't alive, this is a question of why they aren't considered living. As most of us (maybe everybody) know, bacteria phages are what we call 'viruses'. Proven by multiple scientists, they are considered non-living. But why? If they move around and coordinate themselves in a way to destroy cells and harm the host, surely there must be some sort of intelligence in them. According to science (biology, anyways) in order for something to be living that thing has to (using X's and O's to mark what is true of them [O] and what they don't have [X]): Grow. - X Reproduce. - if destroying a host cell to make more of them counts then this is fact Maintain homeostasis. - X Perform metabolism. - X Have genetic information and passed it to their descendants. - O (copies of themselves with DNA/RNA inside) Respond to their environment. - O (mutation, in other words) Require a source of energy. - O Have complex biochemical processes. - I'm not quite sure about this one Composed of cells. - X The outer shell of the phage is protein (correct me if I'm mistaken). So, if something so intelligent can practically kill the host, why is it not considered living? Is it because they don't have the required nucleus like all cells? Is it because they don't have enough DNA/RNA? What is it that considers their type? One more question: If a bacteria phage injects its DNA/RNA into a cell, what happens to the shell? Does it just float around in the blood? Does it reproduce the DNA/RNA to continue it's journey?
