Which Alternative Energy Is Better?

As we struggle to do the right thing for our planet while also protect our families finances we are faced with many decisions. Trying to choose the best alternative energy source is one of those decisions.

There are several sources of energy that are gaining popularity, in large part due to technological advances that have improved the effectiveness of these energy sources.

For the purpose of this article I'm only going to concentrate on two: wind power and solar power. Mostly because these seem to be the two that are the most accessible to the average homeowner.

Solar power isn't a new concept. Many homes have had solar panels on their roofs for 20 years. This is an effective energy source especially in those parts of the country that have a lot of sunny weather...you know who you are!

The problem with solar energy is no matter how sunny your climate is you still can't generate power at night. So for at least half of the day your unit is sitting idle.

Wind power seems to be the new kid on the block, at least as far as home use is concerned. With wind turbines size does matter and up until recently the technology to convert the wind to electricity wasn't good enough to make it worth the investment. That has changed and now even small turbines can help a homeowner save on their bills.

With both wind and solar power you can build the collection units yourself: solar panels or wind turbines. As a matter of fact, I recommend that you do. The conversion rates for these units still isn't so high that you will be able to make all the electricity you need, so the more money you can save up front the sooner your unit will pay for itself.

So take the plunge, pick an alternative energy source and then install it for your home. You'll save money and you can brag to your neighbors that you built it yourself!
